Team India will take on Afghanistan in the first match of the T20I series to be played on 11th January 2024 at Mohali. It would mark the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20I format since the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals against England played at Adelaide Oval.
Former Indian player Suresh Raina expresses that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should be there in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad to be played in the United States of America and West Indies in June this year.
“If you look at the World Cup venues (in the USA and the West Indies), the wickets will be a bit tricky. India will need the experience of Rohit and Kohli there. Kohli is about to make 12000 runs in T20 cricket. So, their presence will boost India’s batting.”
The Indian team will play the 3 last T20I matches against Afghanistan starting from 11th January onwards. These matches would be a few encounters to be played before the World T20 2024 to be played in the West Indies and the United States of America.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli finished as the top two leading run-getters in the recently concluded World Cup 2023. It was an amazing performance by these two greats of Indian cricket. Virat Kohli will be unavailable for the first T20I match to be played at Mohali on 11th January 2024 due to personal reasons.
Virat Kohli’s brilliance in T20I World Cups
Virat Kohli’s presence would major boost for the Indian team during the T20 World Cup 2024 to be played in the USA and West Indies. The selection of the team would be based on the IPL 2024 form and hope that both these players will be part of the prestigious squad.
Virat Kohli was the leading run-getter in the 2022 T20 World Cup but could not take India to win the title as they lost to England. Rohit Sharma led India to the semi-finals of the World T20 2022 losing to England in the semi-finals by 10 wickets.
“I think Kohli should bat at No. 3. His experience will bring in some solidity, especially in the challenging pitches in the US and the Caribbean. There are fearless, young cricketers like Jaiswal, Rinku Singh or Shubman Gill but Rohit and Kohli will give the unit a lot of solidity. Their presence is very important when we chase a target especially in a high-pressure event like the World Cup.”
