India’s Batting Coach Gives Update On Mohammed Shami’s Fitness Status

Pacer Mohammed Shami, a key player in the Indian cricket team, is fit and has no health concerns. Despite speculation around his absence from the first two T20I matches against England, India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, confirmed that Shami’s fitness is not an issue.

The 34-year-old, who last played for India during the ODI World Cup final in November 2023, has been included in the squad for the ongoing T20I series, three subsequent ODIs, and the upcoming Champions Trophy. However, his participation in the remaining matches will depend on decisions made by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Captain and Coach to Decide Shami’s Role

While addressing the media, Kotak emphasized that the team management is carefully planning Shami’s workload in preparation for critical tournaments like the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19.

“Yes, Shami is fit, but whether he plays or not is a decision for Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav,” Kotak stated.

He also mentioned that there is a specific plan for Shami’s involvement in the upcoming matches, including the ODIs. Ensuring that Shami’s workload is managed effectively will be crucial as the team prepares for a packed schedule of important fixtures.

Shami’s Past Injuries and Current Readiness

Shami underwent ankle surgery in February last year, which temporarily affected his availability. While there were calls for his inclusion in India’s Test squad for the series against Australia, he was unable to achieve full match fitness in time for the tournament, despite participating in shorter domestic formats.

Now, with his fitness no longer in question, Shami’s readiness and the strategy around his utilization are entirely in the hands of the team’s leadership. His potential return in the ongoing T20I series against England will be closely monitored as India gears up for crucial competitions ahead.

In summary, while Shami is fully fit, his participation in the current series depends on the team’s strategic planning for upcoming tournaments, with his workload being managed to ensure peak performance when it matters most.
