India’s Former Left-Arm Spinner Dilip Doshi Dies At 77

Dilip Doshi, the former Indian left-arm spinner, passed away in London on Monday, June 23, at the age of 77. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, he died due to heart-related complications. Doshi had been residing in London for several years. He is survived by his wife Kalindi, son Nayan, and daughter Vishakha.

Nayan Doshi followed in his father’s footsteps and played cricket for Surrey and Saurashtra. Although his international career was relatively short, Doshi made a significant impact. He represented India in 33 Test matches from 1979 to 1983, taking 114 wickets at an average of 30.71, including six five-wicket hauls and four four-wicket hauls.

In One Day Internationals, he played 15 matches between 1980 and 1982, picking up 22 wickets at an average of 23.81, with two four-wicket hauls and best bowling figures of 4 for 30.

Cricket Fraternity Mourns Dilip Doshi

The BCCI said in its statement:

“The BCCI mourns the sad demise of former India spinner Dilip Doshi, who has unfortunately passed away in London. May his soul rest in peace.”

Tendulkar added in another social media post:

“I met Dilipbhai for the first time in the UK in 1990, and he bowled to me in the nets on that tour. He was really fond of me, and I reciprocated his feelings. A warm-hearted soul like Dilipbhai will be deeply missed. I will miss those cricketing conversations which we invariably had. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti. 🙏🏻”

Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel expressed that he was deeply shocked.

“I’m heartbroken and still in shock about Dilip uncle…he was truly special. Nayan, thinking of you all with love and strength,” he wrote on social media.

Former India captain and head coach Ravi Shastri also paid a heartfelt tribute to Doshi.

“Really sad to hear about the passing of Dilip Doshi. Always immaculate, a gentleman to the core, and a fine, fine bowler. Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”

India’s iconic former spinner and captain Anil Kumble also offered his condolences.

“Heartbreaking to hear about Dilip bhai’s passing. May God give strength to his family and friends to bear this loss. Nayan, thinking of you, buddy.”

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh wrote, “RIP Dilip Doshi sir 🙏🙏🙏 Condolences to family. 💔”
