India struggled against the Sri Lankan bowlers on the first day of the 1st test match at Eden Garden’s, Kolkata. Winning the toss, Lakmal bowled a brilliant spell taking 3 wickets without giving a run. Only 11.5 overs were possible.

After a long delay, the Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal won the toss and elected to field in overcast bowling conditions. KL Rahul was dismissed off the very first ball by Lakmal for 0. The match was interrupted by rain after KL Rahul could not open his account.

Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed playing a poor stroke for 8 runs. His opening partner bowler Gamage could not put pressure on the Indian batsmen. Lakmal then dismissed the dangerous Indian captain Virat Kohli for 0.

Lakmal bowled 6 overs and did not give any runs. Cheteshwar Pujara played solidly and remained not out on 8. It was a great day for the Sri Lankan bowlers to dismiss the top 3 Indian batsmen. At the end of the day, India struggled at 17 for 3 in 11.5 overs.

The rest of four days will start early to make up for the over’s lost on the first day. It will be up to Pujara and Rahane, other Indian batsmen to steady the team on day 2.
