Kolkata Knight Riders have dealt with a massive blow ahead of their clash against Mumbai Indians later today. Regular skipper Dinesh Karthik has stepped down from captaincy owing to their poor run in IPL 2020. World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan has taken over the baton and will lead the side for the rest of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Karthik’s captaincy has been under the scanner ever since IPL started. There have been calls from various section to replace Dinesh Karthik with Eoin Morgan, considering the experience and success the Englishman brings to the table.

Dinesh Karthik steps down as KKR captain

Incidentally, Morgan has led England to their maiden World Cup title last year. Also, the Three Lions are one of the most potent limited-overs sides in the world. Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik so far had failed to motivate his side and his performance barring the one game was not noteworthy.

Kolkata Knight Riders currently sit on the fourth place of the points table with four wins from seven games but have looked rusty. In the wake of the development, Dinesh Karthik has decided to the step down from the helm of the side. Kolkata issued a statement and named Eoin Morgan as the replacement.

“We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes. We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice captain, is willing to lead the side going forward.

DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner”, Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR said in a released statement.

Kolkata Knight Riders face defending champions Mumbai Indians later today at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. It will be Eoin Morgan’s first game as KKR skipper and he will hope to start his campaign with a win.
