IPL 2020 Postponed For Indefinite Period Amid COVID-19 Outbreak

The outbreak of the pandemic coronavirus had a toll on all the sporting activities across the globe including the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had to postpone the league until April 15 which was scheduled to commence from March 29.

There have been a lot of reports going around on the fate of the cash-rich league. Earlier, it was noted that BCCI might take a call after April 14 when the lockdown gets over. But with the lockdown to continue for two more weeks, this is ruled out and the governing body might take some more time to decide to future.

The extension of the lockdown meant BCCI had to postpone the league further. And as per reports, the apex body has decided to postpone the league for an indefinite period. There are suggestions that the high-profile tournament might not take place at all this year, considering the Indian cricket team’s bilateral assignments and the foreign players’ involvement.

Meanwhile, yesterday, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal admitted that the current situation doesn’t allow the board to come up with anything constructive. Meanwhile, not only IPL, other major events like Tokyo Olympic and Wimbledon have also been postponed.

“Right now, the picture is very hazy. We don’t even know when the lockdown will end and if we don’t know, how can we even have a meaningful discussion. Once we get clarity from the government, we can then sit and take fresh stock of the situation. Any speculation about its future will be premature,” Dhumal had said.
