Former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir has backed Ravichandran Ashwin over his fallout with Eoin Morgan in the DC vs KKR clash. KKR prevailed in the game at least but not before both the senior players were involved in a heated verbal battle. An argument broke out in the match involving the two players after Ashwin tried to steal a single, as the ball hit DC captain Rishabh Pant and went close to the 30- yard circle. Morgan felt that Ashwin trying to steal the single was against the spirit of the game and thus took a stand for the team’s cause.

Gautam Gambhir while talking to Star Sports said that he did nothing wrong after his actions were claimed unsportsmanlike. He further said that ex-cricketers comments on Ashwin hardly make sense.

“I back Ravichandran Ashwin 100 percent. What he did was well within the rules. He has done nothing wrong. And there are so many people who are jumping into it, they have got nothing to do with it. Probably to increase some social media followers or to have some presence somewhere so that people can talk about it. It makes no sense. R Ashwin is absolutely correct” said Gambhir.

KKR wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, in the post-match press conference following KKR’s win revealed that Morgan did not appreciate Ashwin trying to steal a single, sparking once again the ‘spirit of cricket’ debate.

In a series of tweets, Ashwin clarified his stance on the entire matter and said that he in no way has done anything that goes against the laws of cricket.

Did I fight? No, I stood up for myself and that’s what my teachers and parents taught me to do and pls teach your children to stand up for themselves. In Morgan or Southee’s world of cricket they can choose and stick to what they believe is right or wrong but do not have the right to take a moral high ground and use words that are derogatory. What’s even more surprising is the fact that people are discussing this and also trying to talk about who is the good and bad person here”
