The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season is heading towards the business end of the tournament. Interestingly, apart from the Mumbai Indians, all the other nine teams are alive in the race for the playoffs.

The Kolkata Knight Riders and the Chennai Super Kings registered wins in their previous matches to stay in the race. The Shreyas Iyer-led team defeated the Mumbai Indians by 52 runs on Monday, while Chennai Super Kings registered a 91 runs win against the Delhi Capitals.

However, given their position on the points table, it won’t be easy for both teams to make it to the playoffs. Kolkata Knight Riders rank seventh, while Chennai Super Kings are in the ninth position. In this article, we take a look at the qualification scenario for both teams.

The Kolkata Knight Riders started off the IPL 2022 season brilliantly, winning three of their first four matches. However, they lost momentum, thereafter, thanks to their constant chopping and changing policy. Currently, they have 10 points from 12 matches, with five wins and seven losses.

The Shreyas Iyer-led team will play two more matches in the league stages. They will take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Lucknow Super Giants in their last two encounters. The franchise needs to win both matches, which will take them to 14 points. However, this will not guarantee them a playoff spot, as they will have to rely on the results of other teams’ matches. KKR also needs to keep an eye on its NRR, which is – 0.057 at the moment.

The Chennai Super Kings are also in a similar position to the Kolkata Knight Riders. They have eight points from eleven matches and a Net Run Rate of 0.028. Chennai Super Kings began the season on a disastrous note, losing their first four matches of the season. They have made a decent comeback, to keep themselves alive in the tournament.

Chennai Super Kings plays against the Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and the Rajasthan Royals in their final three matches. Just like KKR, they also need to win all those remaining games. However, in comparison, Chennai has a positive NRR, which gives them a better chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
