The BCCI has laid out the retention rules for IPL 2022 after Ahmedabad and Lucknow won the bids as the two new cities who will be joining the eight franchises to make the IPL a 10 team tournament from next year. The Sanjeev Goenka Group have picked Lucknow as their home base for INR 7090 crores, while owners of CVC Capitals have bagged Ahmedabad for INR 5166 crores.
As per the newly laid rules, old teams can keep four players ahead of 2022 auction. After the list of retained players is finalised, the two new franchises will get the first choice from the rest of the pool ahead of the auction where they can pick up a maximum of 3 players. Also, there are two separate forms of retaining the players. Either team can keep two Indian and two overseas players or three Indians and one overseas.
IPL 2022: Franchises Willing To Back Young Talent
Meanwhile, as per reports in Indian Express, Ishan Kishan, Prithvi Shaw and Ruturaj Gaikwad are likely to be retained by their respective franchises. All three are young players with a lot of potential. Gaikwad bagged the Orange Cap and the Emerging Player Award scoring 635 runs in IPL 2021. Kishan only managed 241 runs and was also dropped from the playing XI on many occasions. Shaw scored 479 runs at a brilliant strike rate of 159.13.
While Ishan Kishan has a salary of 6.2 crores, Gaikwad was roped in by CSK for just 20 lakhs. Delhi bought Shaw for 1.2 crores. Apart from these 3, players like Rishabh Pant, Devdutt Padikkal, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja are also expected to be retained by their respective franchises.
Meanwhile, in one of the big developments ahead of the mega auction, teams will not be allowed the Right To Match (RTM) cards in the auction. They will need to take a call on the players ahead of the auction.
