As per reports circling across various media outlets, Rajasthan Royals have retained skipper Sanju Samson for a whopping salary of rupees 14 crores ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The franchise have set their sights on retaining Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer as well before the auctions. IPL 2022 is going to be a 10-team affair with two new teams coming into the fray. The franchisees will be based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad.

Sanju Samson joined Royals in 2018 for INR 8 crore. He was elevated to the captaincy last season and though he couldn’t take the team into the play-offs he still finished 2021 with 484 runs at a strike rate of 137.

Ben Stokes (INR 12.5 crores), Archer (INR 7.2 crores) and Buttler (INR 4.4 crores) also have been big money players for Rajasthan Royals. While Buttler’s retention is close to being finalised, the franchise is awaiting a word on Archer who won the Player Of The Tournament Award in IPL 2020. The pacer was then ruled out of the next IPL season with a longstanding elbow injury.

Meanwhile, there is no word so far on Stokes’ future with the franchise as per reports in ESPN Cricinfo. He too joined the franchise in 2018 and has been a valuable player for them in the past seasons. Liam Livingstone and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the other names in discussion as well.

IPL 2022 Retention Rules

As per the retention rules, the franchisees can retain a maximum of four players and a maximum of two overseas cricketers. Mumbai Indians and IPL 2022 finalists KKR seemed to have identified the players they want to retain and invest in the future.

Sanju Samson Was Initially Promised 16 Crores By Rajasthan Royals

The Royals have still have 48 crores left in their purse to spend at the auction. Samson who was in talks to be paid 16 crores previously has now been settled for 14 crores by the franchise. 16 crores, however, will be debited from their account since he is the first of four players the franchise has chosen to keep.

The Royals will be announcing their final three retentions by November 28.
