Chennai Super Kings had a decent start to IPL 2023 so far. They played a total of 3 matches winning 2 while losing the only game against Gujarat Titans. CSK will play against Rajasthan Royals in their next match to be played today.

Devon Conway has been dismissed cheaply against Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians. Ruturaj Gaikwad looked impressive in the 3 matches he opened the innings laying a foundation for a decent total.

Conway scored well-compiled half-century against Lucknow Super Giants. With a long tournament still left, it will be in good interest for CSK to see Kiwi batter go lower down the order.

Here we look at the 3 reasons why CSK should use Conway in the middle order.

  1. Conway’s ability to play spin in the middle overs.

Chennai Super Kings middle order has struggled so far. Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, and Ajiyanka Rahane has struggled again with spin. Ambati Rayudu, Moeen Ali, and Shivam Dube are known to be big hitters of spinners, but other bowlers usually trouble them a lot.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been in great touch so far. Devon Conway is solid against all types of spin bowling options. The left-handed batter has a brilliant record against off-spinners, using sweeps and reverse sweeps easily to put pressure on opponent bowlers.

Conway would be an ideal option for CSK in the middle overs keeping the scoreboard ticking and making life tough which will allow 4-time champion CSK to score more runs.

  1. Ability to rotate the strike well.

Devon Conway has been dismissed in the first six overs against Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians cheaply. With Ajiyanka Rahane showing class with quickfire knock against MI, it will give time for Conway to keep the scoreboard ticking taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries.

It will be beneficial for the CSK team as Devon Conway to come down the order and play according to the situation. If one of the openers falls, then Conway can show his skills with the ability to rotate the strike and make life tough for opponent bowlers.

  1. Conway is not an ideal foil from a technical point of view with Ruturaj Gaikwad

CSK openers Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad take time before taking on the spinners and not being comfortable against pace and swing.

Conway and Gaikwad has impressed in the only match they put on partnership in this year’s IPL so far. CSK openers do not put pressure on bowlers, especially in the T20 format.

Ruturaj Gaikwad looked in brilliant touch against pace and seam, dropping Devon Conway down the order could be an ideal option.
