The IPL 2023 season was arguably the most watched in the tournament’s history, which was only natural given the number of incredible games that were played to the very last play. The cricket didn’t, however, always hold the audience’s attention.
The IPL 2023 season has included some contentious events that have generated discussion among fans. These controversies were influenced by the intensity of the situation as well as the game’s setting.
The three most controversial events in the IPL 2023 are as follows:
1 The clash between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq
Another controversy involving LSG and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) occurred recently. The final ball had determined RCB’s loss to LSG at home, and the players’ and coach Gautam Gambhir’s celebrations didn’t exactly win Virat Kohli over.
The former RCB captain was fired up after Bangalore defeated Lucknow in the rematch and got into a heated argument with LSG pacer Naveen-ul-Haq during the match. Even after the game, the two engaged in another heated argument that resulted in a larger altercation that also involved Gambhir.
Naveen posted a mysterious Instagram story after RCB’s elimination from the competition, indicating that the contentious post-match exchanges had a lasting impact. Thought to be the most talked-about incident from IPL 2023, it still stands.
2 The Nut and Bolt incident in IPL 2023
In an IPL match that was significant for both teams in the context of the race to the playoffs, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) welcomed the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Numerous umpiring decisions, such as wides and no balls, went against the hosts.
Unhappy and enraged, a portion of the home crowd began throwing objects at the LSG dugout, including nuts and bolts. The play had to be stopped for a while after all-rounder Prerak Mankad, who was at long-on, also received a head injury.
When Lucknow won that game, it was clear how ecstatic they were about the whole ordeal from the way they celebrated. The SRH crowd was investigated for this utterly abhorrent behavior that put the players’ safety in danger.
3 MS Dhoni’s dispute with the officials
Due to his responsibility of bowling at the end of innings, Matheesha Pathirana played a significant role in the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) success in the IPL 2023 season. He was a completely lethal option for MS Dhoni because of his capacity to pick up wickets late in the game.
Pathirana was unable to bowl the 16th over in Qualifier 1 against the Gujarat Titans because of interference from the umpires, who also informed captain MS Dhoni of this. This was due to the fact that the pacer had to be on the field for a predetermined number of minutes in order to be eligible to bowl and was off the field for a predetermined amount of time.
It was a pivotal moment in the game because if Pathirana hadn’t bowled that over, Dhoni would have had to consider a sixth bowling option. When it was finally time for Pathirana to bowl, the CSK captain displayed excellent poise by continuing to speak with the umpires.
Despite having to keep an additional fielder in the circle for the final two overs because of the slow over rate, Pathirana bowled his four overs, and CSK won the match by 15 runs. However, some spectators criticized the umpires for allowing the former Indian captain to simply prolong the game.
