Kolkata Knight Riders snatched a win from the jaws of defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad in match number 47 of IPL 2023 played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on 4 May. Varun Chakravarthy bowled exceptionally well in the final over and sealed the deal for KKR.
“My heartbeat was touching 200 in the last over, but I wanted them to hit the longer part of the ground. The ball was slipping a lot and my best bet was the longer side and that was my only hope. My first over I went for 12 runs, Markram hit me for 2 fours and that’s how the game goes,” Varun Chakravarthy, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, said in the presentation ceremony.
Varun Chakvarthy held onto his nerves as KKR registered 5-run win. With 38 runs required off 30 deliveries, Heinrich Klassen was dismissed by Shardul Thakur to change the momentum.
Talking about the difference between this year’s bowling and last year’s, he said, “Last year I was bowling around 85kmph, I was trying out many things and I realized that I needed to work on my revolutions, and I did work on it.”
KKR post competitive total
It was not an ideal start as Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Jason Roy were dismissed cheaply. Rinku Singh and Nitish Rana steadied the ship for KKR showing intent to keep pressure on SRH bowlers. Aiden Markram took a stunning return catch to dismiss Rana. Rana and Rinku Singh added 61 runs for the 4th wicket.
Andre Russell showed intent and hit some lovely shots. Markande got rid of Russell with a good delivery caught by Natarajan. KKR batting included Sunil Narine, Shardul Thakur struggled while Rinku Singh played an impressive inning. At the end of 20 overs, KKR posted 171 for 9 in 20 overs.
Kolkata Knight Riders have 3 home games away awaiting and need to win those games.
