IPL 2023: [WATCH] “When A Man Hits You Like Dhoni” – R Ashwin Discusses How Sandeep Sharma Outwitted MS Dhoni

In the 2023 Indian Premier League, the Rajasthan Royals defeated the Chennai Super Kings twice, which is a remarkable feat. However, R Ashwin described how he assisted him when Sandeep Sharma held MS Dhoni in check in the final over during the match where they beat CSK by three runs as well.

At the MS Dhoni-led CSK’s home stadium (MA Chidambaram Stadium), Sanju Samson’s team defied the odds to win the first leg, and they then easily defeated the team in yellow at their own stadium by a score of 32 runs. Sandeep Sharma was the mastermind behind the sensational victory. The Royals pulled off in Chennai despite the fact that the second victory was far more convincing for the Royals.

The Indian pacer appeared to lose composure as he bowled a few wides in his final over of the game, and Dhoni then whipped him over square leg and mid-wicket for a few sixes.

A narrow victory for the Royals was ensured when the medium pacer, who had to defend 6 off the final two deliveries, got a wide yorker to Jadeja and then a perfect block-hole ball to Dhoni. He only gave up a few singles in the process.

After the victory, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was also a member of the winning RR XI, spoke in-depth about the decisive over and revealed his conversation with Sandeep just before the final delivery. Interestingly, Ashwin explained why he chose the “riskiest” delivery and suggested that the pacer use it.

“In the last over he faced, Dhoni hit Sandeep Sharma for two sixes. The odds of you winning that battle from there are practically zero when you are defending 20 runs and a player like Dhoni has smacked you for two sixes,” said R Ashwin.

Check how they planned to win over CSK:

“What ball poses the greatest risk at this time, I enquired. Slower length ball,” Sandeep said.

“The riskiest ball at that point is ultimately the one the batter won’t be expecting. Because he recognizes the bowler’s tremendous pressure,” R Ashwin continued.

The Super Kings are second with 11 points. While the Royals are currently in fourth place with five victories in nine games. The Super Kings’ match against the Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday was postponed.
