Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu, a key contributor to three IPL victories under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, has named 26-year-old batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad as the potential successor to lead CSK once Dhoni decides to retire, likely after the IPL 2024 season. Despite the notable presence of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Rayudu expressed his preference for Gaikwad to take on the captain’s role.
Rayudu, who shares the record for the highest number of six IPL titles, suggested Gaikwad as the ideal candidate during an interview on the BeerBiceps YouTube channel. Reflecting on CSK’s future post-Dhoni, Rayudu remarked, “I think, ideally, it should be Rutu – let’s see.” This recommendation is significant given Rayudu’s experience and success with CSK, making it a noteworthy insight into potential leadership choices.
Dhoni, who secured CSK’s fifth IPL title in the latest season, is expected to consider retiring after the IPL 2024. Having captained CSK since the inception of the IPL, Dhoni briefly passed the captaincy to Jadeja ahead of the IPL 2022 but reclaimed it after a challenging start to the season. Now, as Dhoni’s playing career approaches its conclusion, the franchise is actively contemplating the future captaincy, with Rayudu advocating for Gaikwad.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made his IPL debut for CSK in 2020, showcased his batting prowess by emerging as the leading run-scorer in the 2021 season with 635 runs in 16 matches. His impactful performances played a pivotal role in CSK’s title victories in 2021 and 2023. Following his impressive show in the IPL 2021, Gaikwad was retained by CSK as one of the four players ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, solidifying his status as a key player for the franchise.
