IPL 2024 Auction: Unfortunate Releases – Spotlight On One Player Per Team

In the lead-up to the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai, fans eagerly tuned in on November 26 to witness the unveiling of release and retention lists by franchises, a strategic move allowing teams to shed underperforming players. While several cricketers failed to make the cut due to lackluster performances, a distinct group drew attention for their untimely exclusion, either due to insufficient opportunities or sidelined by injuries during the preceding season.

As the anticipation builds for the upcoming mini-auction, it’s worth highlighting one unfortunate player from each franchise who found themselves on the chopping block. The spotlight now falls on those who, unlike non-performers, were denied adequate chances or faced setbacks like injuries.

Let’s delve into the roster of unlucky players released by each IPL team in the pre-2024 auction, beginning with the Rajasthan Royals’ decision to part ways with Obed McCoy.

In the grand 2022 auction, Rajasthan Royals secured the services of West Indies’ left-arm pacer Obed McCoy for INR 75 lakh. Making his debut in the previous season, McCoy showcased promise by claiming 11 wickets in seven matches at an economy of 9.17. Encouraged by his commendable performance, RR opted to retain him for the 2023 season.

However, the 2023 season proved to be a stark contrast as McCoy was granted only one appearance. In that lone outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Jaipur, he bowled just one over, contributing to RR’s four-wicket defeat by conceding 13 runs. Curiously, after this brief stint, RR captain Sanju Samson chose not to extend McCoy’s bowling responsibilities in the game.

Failing to align with RR’s strategic vision, McCoy found himself on Rajasthan’s release list ahead of the 2024 IPL auction. His lackluster showing for Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) further fueled doubts about his suitability for the franchise’s future plans.
