The five-time Champions Mumbai Indians finished last in the points table of IPL 2024 after their 18 run loss to Lucknow Super Giants during match 67 played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 17th May.
Chasing a mammoth target of 215, Rohit Sharma looked in good touch putting pressure on Lucknow Super Giants bowlers with some attacking shots. On the other hand, Dewald Brevis opened the innings and struggled with his timing. The rain arrived with Mumbai Indians on 33 for 0.
After the rain break, Rohit Sharma showed intent to keep the scoreboard ticking with some lovely shots not allowing the LSG bowlers to settle. Mumbai Indians finished the first six overs at 53 for 0. After field restrictions, Rohit looked in great touch keeping scoreboard ticking reaching fifty off 28 balls. Mumbai Indians collapsed as Brevis struggling innings ended caught by Krunal Pandya at long-on. Rohit and Brevis put on 88 runs for the opening wicket.
Suryakumar Yadav went without opening his account caught by Ravi Bishnoi. Mumbai Indians kept losing wickets at regular intervals as LSG bowlers kept tight lines and lengths. Naman Dhir showed some intent keeping MI hopes alive with some lusty hitting while Ishan Kishan struggled with his batting. Dhir reached fifty off 25 balls remaining not out on 62. Dhir and Kishan added 68 runs for the 6th wicket. Mumbai Indians finished their innings at 196 for 6 in 20 overs.
MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to field first. Arjun Tendulkar was included in the playing XI as Bumrah was rested. Nicolas Pooran came to the crease blasting away the Mumbai Indians bowling. He smashed 75 off 29 balls that helped LSG recover from a tough situation. Thusara struck twice getting wickets of Pooran and Arshad Khan. After three quick wickets, Mumbai Indians bowlers struggled as Ayush Badoni and Krunal Pandya added 36 runs for the 7th wicket that helped LSG post 214 for 6. For Mumbai Indians, Piyush Chawla and Nuwan Thusara picked 3 wickets each.
Mumbai Indians’ disappointing performance in IPL 2024
Mumbai Indians finished last in the points table with disappointing performances. They registered only 4 victories and lost 10 matches. Their wins came against RCB, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Jasprit Bumrah ended as the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians with 20 wickets from 13 matches (13 innings) at an economy of 6.48 runs per over including best figures of 5 for 21 against RCB.
Rohit Sharma finished as the leading run-getter for Mumbai Indians with 417 runs from 14 matches (14 innings) including 1 century and 1 half-century to his name including the best score of 105 not out against CSK which was not enough for MI to win.
Moral of the story for teams finishing at 7 wins – when you win, win well, but when you lose, DON'T lose badly. That run-rate bites you hard at the end.

Standing ovation followed by a round of thunderous "Rohit, Rohit!" chants as Rohit Sharma made his way back.
Whatever he decides about his future will be massive either way..because the emotions of the Wankhede are still so intense for him.
He is the 'Gold' in 'Blue and Gold'

Disappointing season for Mumbai Indians coming to an end. Lot to ponder over. Some outstanding match winners still didn’t get the result. Badly managed on the field. Not getting good start regularly is another. Not enough support to Jassi either.

It wasn’t just the end result that will disappoint Mumbai Indians. It’s the lack of will that will haunt their fans for a long time. Nobody, bar Jasprit Bumrah played par cricket; they never looked like a Team#MIvsLSG
