IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya To Lead Mumbai Indians
Hardik Pandya

All-rounder Hardik Pandya will be leading the Mumbai Indians in the 2024 Indian Premier League season, announced the franchise on Friday, December 15. He will succeed Rohit Sharma, who has been their longest-serving and one of the most successful captains of the tournament.

Rohit Sharma has handed over the leadership baton to Hardik Pandya ahead of the 2024 season. Hardik led the Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL title in 2022. They also reached the finals last season under his leadership. He was traded to the Mumbai Indians in an all-cash deal last month. The all-rounder has led in 31 IPL matches, winning 22. He has an excellent record of 70.97 win percentage.

Speaking on Hardik Pandya’s appointment as the captain, Mahela Jayawardene, the Global Head of Performance, said,

“It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.”

We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma: Mahela Jayawardene

Rohit Sharma took over the leadership from Ricky Ponting in 2013. He has led them to five Indian Premier League (IPL) title wins, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. It is the joint-most for any captain alongside the Chennai Super Kings skipper, MS Dhoni. Overall, Rohit Sharma has led the Mumbai Indians in 158 IPL matches, winning 87 of those. He has a win percentage of 55.06 in the Indian Premier League.

“We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary,” said Mahela Jayawardene in a statement released by the Mumbai Indians.
