IPL 2024: Rishabh Pant Is All Set To Lead Delhi Capitals

In the forthcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rishabh Pant is set to take on the captaincy role for Delhi Capitals (DC), marking a remarkable return to professional cricket following a challenging period.

Having endured a harrowing car accident last December, Pant’s participation as an ‘Impact Player’ had been speculated due to his ongoing recovery. However, the latest confirmation from DC management reveals his leadership role, ensuring his presence on the field as his team takes to the pitch.

Despite initial concerns about his fitness, Pant, 26, is anticipated to achieve full recovery by the end of February, currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The nod from NCA managers is imperative for Pant to actively participate and assume wicketkeeping duties in every IPL match of the upcoming season.

Pant’s absence was palpably felt during the entire 2023 IPL, where David Warner stepped in as interim captain. Unfortunately, DC concluded the season in the ninth position, securing only five victories out of 14 matches.

With Abishek Porel being the sole wicketkeeper aside from Pant in the squad, the team released Phil Salt, sparking speculation about a potential addition in the upcoming Dubai auction on December 19. Despite this, securing another wicketkeeper is not currently their top priority, although contingency plans are being considered for the team’s safety and balance.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, serving as the team director for Delhi Capitals (DC), officially announced the return of Rishabh Pant, affirming his readiness for the next IPL season. Ganguly expressed confidence in Pant’s recovery, stating, “He’s (Pant) in good form now and will be part of the IPL in the upcoming season.”

In the previous IPL edition of 2023, Delhi Capitals experienced a challenging campaign, finishing in the ninth position on the points table. Pant’s absence was notably impactful, and now, as they gear up for the next season, the Capitals are placing their hopes on the influential leadership of Pant to orchestrate a turnaround in their fortunes.
