Mumbai Indians appointed Hardik Pandya as the captain replacing Rohit Sharma for Indian Premier League 2024. Hardik led Gujarat Titans to the maiden IPL title in 2022 and led them to the finals in IPL 2023 where they lost to Chennai Super Kings.

The franchise lost thousands of followers on social as the fans were not happy with the change of captaincy. Mumbai Indians coach Mark Boucher explained the decision to change the captaincy in a podcast, Rohit Sharma’s wife Ritika Sajdeh took to social media to post a comment that led to a fresh debate on the internet.

Ritika, reacting to the podcast, wrote in the comment section: “So many things wrong with this…”

“I think it was purely a cricketing decision. We saw the window period to get Hardik back as a player. For me, it’s a transition phase. A lot of people don’t understand in India, people get quite emotional, but you know you take the emotions away from it. I think it’s just more of a cricketing decision that was made, and I do think it is going to bring the best out of Rohit as a person and as a player. Just let him go out and enjoy and score some good runs,” Mark Boucher said on the Smash Sports podcast.

Rohit Sharma had a disappointing outing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023. He scored 332 runs from 16 matches (16 innings) with just 2 half-centuries to his name including the best score of 65. Under his captaincy, Mumbai Indians made it into the playoffs stage with a lack of quality bowlers in the squad as Jasprit Bumrah did not take part due to an injury. Jofra Archer played for Mumbai Indians against Royal Challengers Bangalore but could not take further due to injury.

Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians to 5 IPL titles:

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians franchise won 5 titles which is equal to the Chennai Super Kings. They became the Champions for the first time in 2013. Rohit Sharma led the side to win the title again in 2015. They did it again in the 2017 edition while winning two back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020.

Mumbai Indians finished last for the first time in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. They lost to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 during the 2023 edition of IPL.
