India opener Shubman Gill is gearing up for his first major assignment as a captain in the Indian Premier League 2024 season. He will be leading the Gujarat Titans in the upcoming tournament, which kicks off on March 22 in Chennai. The Gujarat Titans were the runners-up in the last season.
Shubman Gill was handed over the captaincy reigns at Gujarat Titans after Hardik Pandya was traded to the Mumbai Indians. The franchise had some experienced candidates, including Rashid Khan, David Miller and Kane Williamson. Rashid had led the franchise in a few matches when Hardik was unavailable. However, they have backed youngster Shubman Gill’s leadership qualities.
“IPL is a fast game and it throws challenges for everyone. We have seen how Shubman Gill has been playing for three years and how he has shaped up. He is 24-25, but he has a good head on his shoulders. We are there to support him. We believe in him that’s why we have made him the captain,” said Ashish Nehra.
The 2024 Indian Premier League season (IPL) will mark Gill’s debut as a captain in the tournament. However, he has some captaincy experience under his belt, leading in domestic tournaments, the Duleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was also India’s A captain during their tour of New Zealand in early 2020. The experience will come in handy for the opener on his first major captaincy assignment.
