Rajasthan Royals achieved the second joint successful run chase against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 16th April 2024.

Since the inception of IPL in 2008, there has been some brilliant batting by franchises that stunned with huge run chases helping them to win matches. During the 2024 season so far, SRH posted 277 and 287 while batting first while KKR posted 272 for 7 against Delhi Capitals.

Due to the impact player rule, the teams are not afraid of scoring runs and chasing down big targets.

Here we look at the top 7 run chases in IPL history so far:

  1. RR 226 for 6 Punjab Kings

Rajasthan Royals successfully chased down a massive target against Punjab Kings at Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on 27th September 2020. Thanks to Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul’s brilliant partnership of 183 runs for the first wicket, Punjab Kings posted 223 for 2. In reply, Steve Smith scored fifty, Samson scored 85 while Rahul Tewaita hit 5 sixes in succession which made the difference.

Tom Curran hit the winning runs with a boundary to help RR win the match by 4 wickets with 3 balls to spare. Tewaita smashed 5 sixes against Sheldon Cottrell which changed the momentum in favor of RR. For his 85 off 42 deliveries, Sanju Samson was named the player of the match award. It was a brilliant batting effort by both teams in a superb batting paradise.

  1. RR 224 for 8 vs KKR

The Rajasthan Royals pulled off the second-highest run chase in IPL history. They achieved this feat against Kolkata Knight Riders during match 31 on 16th April 2024 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and decided to field first. Avesh Khan and Kuldeep Sen bowled decently with disciplined lines and lengths. Sunil Narine was the pick of batters for KKR scoring 109 along with contributions by Rinku Singh, and Raghuvanshi who helped the host post 223 for 6 in 20 overs.

Chasing down 224 runs to win, Jos Buttler looked impressive coming as an impact player. Jaiswal showed his class with a quickfire cameo. Riyan Parag showed his class with 34 off 14 balls. Rovman Powell also made an impression with quickfire cameo.

Jos Buttler played a superb knock, remaining not out on 107 off 60 balls with 9 fours and 6 sixes that helped RR register a 2-wicket win. For his brilliance, Buttler was named the player of the match award.

  1. Mumbai Indians 219 for 6 vs CSK

Mumbai Indians registered the third-highest run chase in IPL history. They achieved this feat against Chennai Super Kings on 1st May 2021 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi.

MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field first. It was a disappointing bowling performance as they conceded 218. Kieron Pollard took 2 wickets while Bumrah and Boult took 1 wicket. For CSK, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, and Ravindra Jadeja scored runs that helped them to post 218 for 4 in 20 overs.

Chasing 219 runs to win, De Kock and Rohit Sharma got off to a flying start putting on 71 runs for opening wicket. Krunal Pandya also contributed 32 off 23 deliveries. Kieron Pollard played a blinder remaining not out on 87 off 34 balls with 6 fours and 8 sixes that helped MI chase down 219 off final delivery. Kieron Pollard was named the player of the match award for his all-round contributions.

  1. RR 217 vs Deccan Chargers

Rajasthan Royals successfully chased down 215 against Deccan Chargers in the first edition of IPL on 24th April 2008 at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Hyderabad.

RR’s first captain Shane Warne won the toss and decided to field first. Thanks to Andrew Symonds superb 117 not out helped Deccan Chargers post 214 for 5 in 20 overs.

Chasing down 215 to win, Graeme Smith 71, Yusuf Pathan 61, Mohammad Kaif 34, and Shane Warne 22 off 9 deliveries helped RR win the match by 3 wickets with 1 ball to spare. Warne finished the match with a six to register a memorable win for RR.

  1. SRH 217 for 7 vs RR

Sunrisers Hyderabad proved their worth by chasing down 215 against Rajasthan Royals at Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on 7th May 2023. It was a superb batting display by RR batters as Buttler’s 95 and Samson’s 66 helped RR post 214 for 2 in 20 overs.

Chasing down 215 to win, Anmolpreet Singh came as an impact player and put on 51 runs for the opening wicket with Abhishek Sharma. Rahul Tripathi also contributed with 47, Klassen also made 26 off 12 deliveries. Glenn Phillips and Abdul Samad’s quickfire cameos helped SRH stun RR by 4 wickets off the last delivery.

Samad finished off with a six that helped Sunrisers Hyderabad win a thrilling encounter against RR at their fortress. For his 25 off 7 balls, Glenn Phillps was named the player of the match award.

  1. MI 216 for 4  vs PBKS

Mumbai Indians proved their worth with a superb batting against Punjab Kings during the IPL 2023 match played at PCA Stadium, Mohali on 3rd May.

Thanks to brilliant knocks by Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma, Punjab Kings posted 214 for 3 in 20 overs. In reply, Rohit Sharma fell without opening his account. Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav showed their array of strokes that put PBKS bowlers under pressure.

Things looked tricky after the fall of Surya and Kishan’s wicket. Tim David and Tilak Varma ensured that Mumbai Indians won the match by 6 wickets with 7 balls to spare. Tilak Varma finished the match with a six and finished on 216 for 4. For his 75 off 41 balls, Ishan Kishan was player of the match award.

  1. Delhi Daredevils 214 for 3 vs Gujarat Lions

Delhi Capitals formerly known as Delhi Daredevils chased down a massive target against Gujarat Lions on 4th May 2017 at New Delhi.

Gujarat Lions posted 208 for 7 thanks to contributions from Suresh Raina 77, Dinesh Karthik 66, and Aaron Finch’s cameo helped GT post a big total. In reply, Sanju Samson 67 along with Pant’s 97 ensured that Delhi Daredevils were on course for a win.

With 1 run to win, Corey Anderson hit the winning runs with a six helping Delhi Daredevils win the match by 7 wickets with 15 balls to spare.
