Shubman Gill is gearing up to make his captaincy debut for the Gujarat Titans in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. They are set to play against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday, March 24 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Ahead of the match, the youngster reflected on his cricketing journey so far.

Shubman Gill will be taking over the leadership duties of the Gujarat Titans from Hardik Pandya. He recalled his childhood when he used to sneak into stadiums to meet players. He expressed that he is grateful for what he has achieved so far, and is looking for the upcoming challenges. In an interview with the IPL, Shubman Gill said,

“I remember the first time I sneaked in, and jumped off a gate, and the security guards were chasing us. It was me and some of my best friends, we got pictures with Brett Lee, and we met Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Actually MI (Mumbai Indians) so we met Sachin sir as well. Looking back at those memories, and now captaining an IPL team, it’s been a great journey. Very grateful for whatever I have achieved so far, and hopefully I will be able to do a lot more.”

Further talking about his captaincy debut for the Gujarat Titans, Shubman said, “I can’t pinpoint something that would be the difference. But hopefully by the end of this season, if I am happy and my team is happy, hopefully there will be plenty of good memories with my teammates and my team. If I am able to do that, I would just sit back and tell myself that we have had a pretty successful season.”

Shubman Gill draws captaincy inspiration from Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma

In the interview with IPL, Shubman Gill also spoke about his inspirations Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. He expressed that he has learnt a lot from watching Dhoni lead, and his India captain Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill said,

“I haven’t played under Mahi bhai as such. But as a kid watching him go about things, how he used to handle the things on the field, he is my inspiration.”

“I have played most of my tests under Rohit bhai, and there are a lot of qualities that I will be picking personally from Rohit bhai,” he added.
