Virat Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, recently discussed the most heart-wrenching moments of his career ahead of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) crucial match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The game, potentially Kohli’s last in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), will take place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The outcome is pivotal for RCB’s playoff aspirations, with three teams already secured and the fourth spot hanging in the balance.
RCB faces a challenging path to the playoffs, needing not only to win but to do so by a substantial margin to keep their hopes alive. In contrast, CSK requires just a single point to qualify. The match could mark the end of the season for one of these cricket legends, Kohli or MS Dhoni.
In a conversation with Jio Cinema, Kohli reflected on his career and his respect for Dhoni. He also recounted the most painful setbacks he has endured on the cricket field. Despite his prolific run-scoring and leadership, Kohli has often found himself on the losing side in crucial matches since 2013. His first major disappointment came in the 2009 IPL final, followed by another final loss in 2011, the same year India won the Cricket World Cup.
In 2013, Kohli tasted victory with India in the Champions Trophy but faced defeat in the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. His most notable personal achievement came in the 2016 IPL season when he amassed 973 runs and led RCB to the final. However, despite playing at home, his team fell short against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The 2016 T20 World Cup, held in India, was another significant heartbreak for Kohli. Although he was the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer, India lost to West Indies in the semifinals at Wankhede Stadium, dashing their title hopes. This loss, coupled with the subsequent IPL final defeat, represents the most devastating period in Kohli’s illustrious career.
