Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured their spot in the IPL 2024 final with a convincing victory over Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 in Chennai. They will now face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), also former champions, in the title match on Sunday.
Following a heavy defeat by KKR in Qualifier 1, SRH regrouped, particularly strengthening their bowling, to eliminate Rajasthan from the tournament with a 36-run triumph.
In pursuit of SRH’s 175 for 9, despite Heinrich Klassen’s 34-ball 50, Rajasthan could only reach 139 for 7 as Shahbaz Ahmed (3 for 23) and Abhishek Sharma (2 for 24) caused trouble for the Royals with their spin.
In a post-match video by SRH, skipper Pat Cummins summarized the game, highlighting the spinners’ performance and subtly cautioning KKR. You can watch the video here:

“Wonderful game tonight. We got 170-odd (175 for 9) with the bat. We probably would have liked a few more (runs), but then went out to bowl, decent powerplay and then the spin twins Abhishek (Sharma) and Shahbaz (Ahmed) were amazing, took key wickets through the middle (overs) and ended up restricting them to… (139 for 7),” said Cummins in the video shot in SRH dressing room at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
“Onto the final in 48 hours. We’ll see you there. The guys are pumped!” he added.
The ultimate showdown of IPL 2024 features SRH and KKR
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will face off against the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai this Sunday, May 26. Kolkata advanced to the grand finale with a dominant win over SRH on May 21.
However, Sunrisers redeemed themselves by securing a spot in the IPL 2024 final as one of the top two teams in the points table. Hyderabad secured their place in the IPL 2024 final by defeating Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 by a margin of 36 runs.
Kolkata boasts an impressive track record in the IPL finals, having made it to the summit clash four times, including the 2024 season. They lifted the IPL trophy twice under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, who currently serves as a mentor for the team in this season.
In their 12 seasons in the IPL, Hyderabad has reached the final on only two occasions. They claimed their first title in 2016 under the captaincy of Australia’s David Warner. Two seasons later, SRH made another final appearance but were defeated by the Chennai Super Kings.
