Shubman Gill‘s start as captain for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL began positively with a challenging six-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday (March 24) at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill assumed leadership after Hardik Pandya departed from GT to rejoin MI, making his captaincy debut against Pandya’s Mumbai team.
Shubman Gill experienced a topsy-turvy journey in his inaugural match as captain. Despite losing the toss, Gujarat Titans opted to bat first and posted a score of 168/8, thanks to valuable performances from Sai Sudharsan (45) and Gill (31) on a challenging pitch.
The target seemed manageable, despite Mumbai Indians boasting a formidable batting order. Following Ishan Kishan’s early dismissal without scoring, Rohit Sharma (43) steadied the innings by forming partnerships with Naman Dhir (20) and Dewald Brevis (46), laying a solid foundation for the chase.
With Mumbai Indians requiring only 48 runs from the final 36 deliveries, Gujarat Titans faced a daunting challenge. However, Shubman Gill and his bowlers remained resilient, delivering outstanding performances in the latter stages of the match to limit Mumbai to 162/9.
GT posted a video on their official Instagram account, providing fans a peek into Shubman’s family’s reaction following Gujarat Titans’ win last night. In the video, the family members of the GT captain were captured congratulating him with affectionate hugs. The caption read:
“Moments we live for 💙 #AavaDe | #GTKarshe | #GTvMI | #TATAIPL2024.”

“It was all about putting the pressure and holding our nerves in the end” -Shubman Gill’s comments on GT’s win against MI in IPL 2024
During the post-match presentation, Gill shared his thoughts on the victory, stating:
“The way the boys held their nerves and how we bowled at the death was magnificent, especially with the dew coming in. Was outstanding. There was a lot of dew, even with it the way our spinners bowled, especially Rashid and Sai, they made sure we were in the game always. It was all about putting the pressure and holding our nerves in the end.”
GT will return to the field on Tuesday (March 26) for their match against CSK in Chennai.
