In an exciting clash at Eden Gardens, Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer elected to bat first after winning the toss against the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), in the IPL 2025 season. Punjab currently sits fifth on the points table with five wins from eight matches, while Kolkata struggles at seventh place, managing only three wins in the same number of games.

With playoff hopes hanging in the balance, KKR must win five of their remaining six matches to stand a chance at making it to the top four. Meanwhile, Punjab needs just three more victories from their last six games to secure qualification.

Shreyas Iyer Reflects on Eden Gardens Return

Addressing the crowd after the toss, Iyer expressed his excitement about returning to Eden Gardens despite the backdrop of his earlier KKR snub.

“We are batting first. Since it’s the same pitch used earlier, a few cracks are visible, and we’ll get a better idea while batting,” he said.

He warmly spoke about playing once again in front of the passionate Kolkata crowd, calling it “another day to come here and embrace.” Iyer stressed the importance of strong starts and urged his team to maintain belief and perform to their best ability.

He emphasized the need for his bowlers to take early wickets to shift the momentum in their favor. Shreyas also announced team changes, with Glenn Maxwell and Azmatullah Omarzai joining the playing XI.

Rahane

On the other side, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane remained optimistic despite recent setbacks. Speaking at the toss, Rahane emphasized the importance of playing brave and positive cricket. He praised his bowlers for their improvements but pointed out that the batting unit needed to step up.

“We have been playing good cricket in patches. It’s all about living in the moment,” Rahane said. KKR made a few adjustments to their lineup, bringing in Rovman Powell, Moeen Ali, and Chetan Sakariya. Both teams entered the match with fresh strategies, knowing the stakes were high as the league stage nears its climax.
