IPL 2025: MS Dhoni, CSK Opt For Dewald Brevis Over England Star

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) roped in young talent Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh midway through IPL 2025. As per The Times of India, the team chose Brevis ahead of England opener Jonny Bairstow.

A CSK insider revealed that the management had considered Bairstow, who went unsold in the mega auction, but eventually opted for Brevis, who too had surprisingly found no buyers. The decision reflected the franchise’s preference for youthful energy over seasoned experience.

The report added that head coach Stephen Fleming strongly backed Brevis’s inclusion, while MS Dhoni, leading the side in the absence of the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, also gave his nod to the move.

He had seemed a suspect against spin in the first two seasons and the data of the player didn’t suggest anything special. But with Ruturaj Gaikwad out with an injury, we were lacking firepower up top and with no chance to make the play-offs, there was scope to experiment,” the source was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

“Bairstow had experience, but by then we were ready to take a chance with young guns,” the source added.

Dewald Brevis Blasts Record-Breaking Century In AUS vs SA 2nd T20I, 2025

Dewald Brevis produced a record-breaking unbeaten century in the second T20I of South Africa’s ongoing series against Australia. After being put in to bat, the Proteas piled up 218/7, with Brevis smashing an unbeaten 125 off just 56 balls, laced with 12 boundaries and eight sixes, striking at 223.21.

Australia, in response, were bundled out for 165, giving South Africa a commanding 53-run win. Brevis reached his century in just 41 balls — the second-fastest for South Africa in T20Is, behind David Miller’s 35-ball effort in 2017 — and became the youngest South African to register a T20I hundred.

His 125* also set the record for the highest individual score by a South African in the format, surpassing Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 123 in 2023 to claim the highest T20I score ever made against Australia.
