Mumbai Indians’ seasoned leg spinner Karn Sharma made a stunning return to the franchise after a gap of 6–7 years, playing a vital role in their thrilling 12-run win against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025. His match-winning spell of 3/36 proved crucial as MI broke DC’s four-match winning streak.
Speaking after the match, Karn shared his joy, saying, “First of all, I’m happy to play again for the Mumbai Indians after 6-7 years. Really happy to pick up where I left off.” The experienced spinner’s spell helped derail Delhi’s chase, especially when the momentum was heavily tilted in their favor.
Ball Change and Strategic Shift
The turning point of the match, according to Karn, was the timely ball change during Delhi’s innings. As dew made the old ball ineffective, MI requested a new one, which worked to their advantage.
Karn explained, “The change of ball can be termed as the game-changing moment. The old ball was getting wet due to dew. The new ball gives you that ‘purchase’ from the wicket, which Santner and I were able to extract.”Â
With Karn and Santner operating in tandem, MI managed to slow down the scoring rate and pick up key wickets just when Delhi looked to accelerate. The game-changing phase came when DC started losing wickets in quick succession, and MI’s spinners tightened their grip.
Staying Ready and Seizing the Moment
Reflecting on the unpredictability of IPL selections, Karn noted the importance of staying mentally prepared. “IPL is one such tournament where you cannot predict if you will be in the starting XI. You just have to believe in yourself that wherever you get a chance, you have to perform, and at the end of the day, the team should win.
Two points are most important.” He also emphasized his approach to the game: “My mantra is ‘It’s a new day and a new opportunity… I just have to wait for that.'” Talking about the crucial moment in the match, Karn identified the dismissal of KL Rahul as a key breakthrough: “He [KL Rahul] performed well in the previous match [vs RCB], so his wicket was pivotal.” With this win, MI will now look ahead to their next clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, hoping to build momentum for the remainder of the season.
