The Rajasthan Royals (RR) are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a pivotal IPL 2025 fixture—but once again, they’ll be without their charismatic captain, Sanju Samson. The franchise confirmed that Samson will continue his recovery from an abdominal injury sustained during the high-octane Super Over clash against Delhi Capitals (DC).

Sanju Samson’s Current Injury Status

Sanju Samson is dealing with an abdominal injury that has sidelined him for two consecutive matches. This setback occurred during RR’s thrilling encounter with DC, where he had to retire hurt after a solid 31 off 19 balls. The injury ruled him out of the Super Over and, ultimately, out of action since.

According to an official statement by the Rajasthan Royals franchise, “Samson is currently undergoing recovery and will remain at the team’s home base (Jaipur) with select RR medical staff.” The team has opted for a cautious, game-by-game approach to monitor his return, showing just how crucial he is to their long-term campaign.

The franchise said in a statement, “As part of his ongoing rehab process, he will not be travelling to Bangalore for the upcoming match against RCB. The team management is monitoring his progress closely and will take a game-by-game approach regarding his return to action.”

This isn’t the first time Samson has missed a game this season. Earlier in IPL 2025, he was recovering from a finger injury picked up during a T20I series against England. His absence then, much like now, left a leadership gap—but it also opened the door for new talent to shine.

Riyan Parag Stepping In as Captain

Riyan Parag, often seen as a young spark in the RR lineup, has stepped up as the interim captain. While his captaincy might have been unexpected, Parag’s on-field attitude and fearless batting have made him a solid stand-in for Samson.

In the four matches where Parag has taken the reins, he’s managed to score 105 runs with a strike rate of 147.88. He’s leading with intent and showing flashes of tactical brilliance, even if the results haven’t always gone RR’s way.

RR’s Performance Without Samson

Without Samson, RR has experienced heartbreakingly close games. The Super Over loss to DC stung, but the two-run defeat against LSG was perhaps more painful, considering they were playing at home and had the upper hand for much of the match.

Spotlight on Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Now let’s talk about the phenom himself—Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He opened the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal and showed poise well beyond his years. This duo brings a mix of youthful exuberance and calculated aggression. With Jaiswal’s experience and Suryavanshi’s fearless strokeplay, they could form a formidable opening pair—starting with their matchup against RCB in Bengaluru.
