They used the Right to Match (RTM) card to bring back star pacer Arshdeep Singh and re-signed utility player Harpreet Brar. However, the biggest talking point was their high-profile purchases, including IPL 2024-winning captain Shreyas Iyer and veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Strengths of PBKS in IPL 2025
One of the biggest strengths for PBKS this season is the acquisition of Shreyas Iyer. Having led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title in 2024 and previously taking Delhi Capitals to a final, Iyer brings strong leadership and stability to the batting lineup. With 3127 IPL runs at an average of 32+, his ability to anchor the innings and handle spin will be crucial for PBKS. His experience and tactical acumen could finally provide Punjab with a stable captain, something they have lacked in recent years.
PBKS strengthened their bowling attack by signing IPL’s highest-ever wicket-taker, Yuzvendra Chahal, for Rs. 18 crore. The wrist-spinner, who boasts 205 IPL wickets at an average of 22.44, is a match-winner and will play a key role in Punjab’s success. His vast experience in T20 cricket makes him the go-to bowler in the middle overs.
Punjab Kings have one of the most formidable pace attacks in IPL 2025. Arshdeep Singh remains their most reliable Indian pacer, while the addition of Marco Jansen gives them a potent left-arm pace duo. Further depth is provided by Yash Thakur, Kuldeep Sen, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Lockie Ferguson, Xavier Bartlett, and all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Azmatullah Omarzai. This pace-heavy approach gives PBKS multiple options to exploit different conditions.
Weaknesses of PBKS in IPL 2025
While PBKS has a strong top order featuring Iyer, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis, their backup batting options are weak. Beyond their starting XI, there’s a lack of dependable Indian batters. With only Priyanshu Arya (16 T20 games) and Vishnu Vinod (6 IPL matches) as backup batting options, any injury or loss of form in the top order could spell trouble.
Chahal is undoubtedly an asset, but PBKS lacks a solid second spinner. Harpreet Brar, their only notable Indian spinner, has an underwhelming IPL record of 25 wickets in 41 matches at an average of 35+. Maxwell may have to contribute overs, but Punjab’s spin attack appears thin, which could be exploited by opposition teams on slow pitches.
Despite a surplus of pace options, PBKS will likely struggle to fit most of them into the playing XI. Given the four overseas player restriction, only Marco Jansen is likely to feature regularly. This leaves quality pacers like Lockie Ferguson, Xavier Bartlett, and Azmatullah Omarzai warming the bench, making their purchases seem excessive compared to other team needs.
Opportunities for PBKS in IPL 2025
With Shreyas Iyer as captain and Ricky Ponting as head coach, PBKS has a great opportunity to rebuild a strong, cohesive team. Ponting’s experience in grooming young talent and Iyer’s ability to lead from the front can transform Punjab’s fortunes.
Punjab has signed some of the biggest names in T20 cricket. If Stoinis, Maxwell, and Chahal fire consistently, they can turn Punjab into a title-contending side. The presence of a winning captain in Iyer further boosts their credentials.
Threats for PBKS in IPL 2025
The biggest concern for PBKS is their unpredictable batting lineup. While their top order looks strong on paper, their Indian batting depth is questionable. If key overseas players like Maxwell and Stoinis fail to deliver, PBKS could struggle. Lack of a second specialist spinner might hurt PBKS, especially on spin-friendly pitches. If Chahal has an off day or is injured, the team lacks a strong backup option to rely on.
While having a plethora of pace options is great, PBKS might find it challenging to balance their squad selection. If they fail to use their bowling resources efficiently, it could lead to tactical blunders, affecting their campaign.
If PBKS can manage their squad effectively and capitalize on the leadership of Iyer and Ponting, they could emerge as strong contenders for the IPL 2025 playoffs. However, to go all the way, they must address their glaring weaknesses before the season kicks off.
