The IPL 2025 season is set to commence on March 21, with the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata likely hosting both the tournament opener and the final on May 25. Additionally, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 is expected to run from February 7 to March 2, featuring matches in Mumbai, Bangalore, Baroda, and Lucknow.

Organizers had initially reserved a window from March 15 to May 25 for IPL 2025. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided on a March 21 start to ensure a two-week gap after the ICC Champions Trophy final on March 9.

As per ESPNcricinfo, the IPL 2025 schedule is anticipated to be released later this month. Following tradition, the defending champions’ home venue will host the opening match and the final. With Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) crowned champions in 2024, Eden Gardens is also set to stage Qualifier 2, while Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator will take place in Hyderabad.

IPL 2025 will feature a total of 74 matches, maintaining the same format as the previous three editions of the T20 league.

Kolkata Knight Riders were the standout team of IPL 2024

In IPL 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders delivered a dominant performance, securing their third title. Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer and with Gautam Gambhir as their mentor, KKR topped the points table with 20 points. They won nine out of 14 league matches, suffered only three losses, and had two no-results.

In Qualifier 1, KKR defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in Ahmedabad. The two teams faced off again in the final at Chepauk, where Kolkata clinched the title with another commanding eight-wicket victory over SRH.

However, ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, KKR released Shreyas Iyer, who was later bought by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for a record ₹26.75 crore. Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir now serves as the head coach of the Indian men’s team.
