IPL franchise owners will gather in Ahmedabad on April 16 for a crucial meeting, likely to be attended by BCCI officials including secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny, and league chairman Arun Dhumal. The meeting is expected to focus on various issues impacting the future of the league.
While the franchises are expected to bring their entire business teams, the meeting itself is reserved for franchise owners only. Although the agenda has not been specified in the invitation by IPL CEO Hemang Amin, discussions are anticipated to revolve around the league’s future and other relevant topics.
As per a report from Cricbuzz, the upcoming mega auction will be a focal point of discussion, particularly due to differing opinions among franchise owners regarding its execution.
Some owners advocate for a significant expansion in the number of player retentions, with suggestions going as far as proposing eight retentions, double the current standard.
“They will discuss the way forward for the IPL,” said a source familiar with the matter told Cricbuzz.
Owners have voiced their frustration with the mega-auction policy and the three-year cycle of having to rebuild teams from scratch. This process often results in franchises losing players they have nurtured without any financial compensation.
However, some owners are against increasing the number of player retentions. Instead, they are considering reintroducing the popular ‘Right-to-Match’ option, which was absent in the previous auction. This measure aims to give franchises some leverage in retaining their players.
The BCCI aims to find a mutually agreeable solution during the meeting in two weeks.

The current ₹100 crore salary cap that franchises adhere to when constructing their squads may also see an upward revision.
Franchises, which receive a portion of the BCCI’s revenue in addition to their own sponsorship agreements and ticket sales, experienced a boost in revenue when the cricketing board inked a historic ₹48,390 crore broadcast agreement.
This deal involved two separate entities securing the rights for digital and television broadcasting.
