Irfan Pathan Assures Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload Unaffected By Mohammed Shami’s Absence

Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan notes that while Jasprit Bumrah’s workload has risen due to Mohammed Shami’s absence, the pace spearhead is currently in excellent physical condition to endure the demands of Test cricket. Bumrah faced a setback with a lower back stress fracture in 2022, leading to surgery and an 11-month hiatus from competitive play.

His return in the Ireland T20I series last August marked a successful comeback, remaining injury-free since. Despite Shami’s sidelined status due to a left ankle injury post his outstanding performance in the previous ODI World Cup, Bumrah is leading India’s bowling attack against England in the ongoing Test series.

Irfan Pathan said: “Obviously, Shami’s absence does have an effect but that does not mean chances of injury will increase for Bumrah. His action is absolutely perfect now.”

When there is pressure from both sides, whether it is Shami taking wickets from one side or Bumrah working quietly from one side…

“Bumrah is taking wickets and Shami is working quietly, their partnership not only reduces the pressure on each other but also augurs well for the team.”

Bumrah’s altered approach post-recovery involves an extended run-up and larger follow-through, a modification intended to reduce strain on his back owing to his distinctive slinging action. Pathan acknowledges the added responsibility on Bumrah due to Shami’s absence, emphasizing the significance of their effective bowling partnership. Despite the increased workload, Pathan believes Bumrah’s enhanced fitness positions him well to navigate the challenges of Test cricket.

Irfan added: “I have been a big fan of Jasprit Bumrah’s attitude, especially in Test cricket, the way he has given priority to Test cricket despite injuries.”
