According to former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, the decision to exclude Rinku Singh from the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa cricket team was “obvious” once Hardik Pandya was fit to return. Rinku Singh had recently been part of the squad during the T20I series against Australia cricket team — though he featured in only one match.
With Hardik now back after recovering from a quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup 2025 semi-final, selectors appear to have preferred the additional flexibility and balance Pandya brings, effectively narrowing squad spots and pushing a specialist batsman like Rinku out.
Squad Balance and Tactical Considerations
Irfan Pathan argued that with Hardik Pandya’s return, the team gains more tactical leeway — particularly a potential pivot toward playing three spinners. He emphasized that having Pandya, possibly along with another finishing-type batter, gives the squad greater all-round depth, which becomes valuable in T20 cricket’s varied conditions. By contrast, a pure batsman without bowling skills — like Rinku — becomes harder to justify in a balanced 15-member XI hoping to maximize versatility.
Indeed, the current squad for the South Africa series reflects this philosophy: multiple all-rounders and bowling-options are prioritized, enhancing flexibility in both batting and bowling departments.
Outlook: What the omission means for Rinku and India’s 2026 Vision
Irfan Pathan didn’t paint the exclusion as a slight against Rinku’s talent — calling the situation “unfortunate” but inevitable given team needs. He also said the selected squad is likely 90–95 % of what India may carry into the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, signaling that management is already focused on building a stable, multi-dimensional core for the future.
For Rinku, this means that unless he evolves into a more well-rounded player (for example contributing with the ball or fielding or offers a specific tactical edge), his path back into India’s T20 side may remain challenging — especially when spots are limited and competition intense. Meanwhile, for India, the move reflects a broader strategic shift toward balancing firepower with all-round flexibility as they build toward the World Cup.
