Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has thrown his weight behind newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir, praising his determination to build a culture where team success outweighs individual stardom.

Pathan argued that for too long, Indian cricket has been influenced by a “star culture”, which often allowed certain players to keep their place despite poor form. “Ek banda fail hue ja raha hai 3, 4, 5 saal aur phir bhi usko khila rahe ho… yeh culture khatam hona chahiye,” Pathan said, stressing that consistent non-performance should no longer be overlooked.

He noted that Gambhir’s arrival, coupled with the vision of chief selector Ajit Agarkar, presents an opportunity to shift the mindset toward merit-based selections. According to Pathan, such a transformation would ensure that India rewards performance rather than reputation.

A Call for Merit Over Favouritism

Pathan emphasized that when underperforming players continue to get extended runs, it blocks opportunities for younger and deserving cricketers waiting in the wings. He believes this imbalance has hurt Indian cricket for years. “Agar aapko sach mein progress karna hai toh performance-based selection hona hi chahiye. Star culture ki jagah team culture ko priority deni hogi,” he explained.

The former pacer added that Gambhir’s own playing career is a testament to his no-nonsense, team-first approach, and he expects the same clarity in his role as head coach. Pathan underlined that Gambhir has always been outspoken against favoritism and believes in giving players opportunities strictly based on merit and current form.

Building a Stronger Future for Indian Cricket

Irfan Pathan expressed optimism that the Gambhir-Agarkar combination could mark a turning point for Indian cricket. Their shared vision, according to him, can help build a healthier environment where players earn their spots and youngsters feel motivated to break through. “Cricket mein star culture se nuksaan hota hai, team culture se hi aapko World Cup jeetna hai,” Pathan asserted, highlighting that only a united, performance-driven unit can bring long-term success.

He also urged fans and the cricketing fraternity to support this cultural shift, as it would ultimately benefit the national team’s consistency and competitiveness. By ending preferential treatment and focusing on accountability, Pathan believes India can unlock the full potential of its talent pool.

With Gambhir at the helm, Pathan concluded, the Indian team now has a chance to re-establish itself as a side where “performance is the only passport” to success.
