Dinesh Karthik has voiced his enthusiasm at the prospect of being selected for the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled for June in the West Indies and USA.
Karthik’s outstanding performance in the ongoing IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has been remarkable, with 226 runs in seven innings, boasting an impressive average of 75.33 and a staggering strike rate of 2025.45.
In his recent match, the 38-year-old cricketer hammered 83 runs off 35 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite his outstanding performance, RCB couldn’t secure a victory, but he significantly reduced their losing margin to just 25 runs.
“At this stage in my life, it would be the greatest feeling for me to represent India [at the T20 World Cup]. I’m very, very keen to do so.”
“There is nothing bigger in my life other than representing India in this T20 World Cup,”Before RCB’s game against his former team KKR, Karthik made comments on April 20th.
“I also feel there are three very, very stable, honest people who are at their helm to decide what should be the best Indian team for the World Cup. Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma, and Ajit Agarkar.”
“And I’m completely with them. I respect any decision that they take. But all I can say is I’m 100% ready. And you know I’ll do everything I can to be on that flight to the World Cup,” he added.
During IPL 2022, Karthik scored 330 runs with a strike rate of 183.33, leading to his impressive return to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup in Australia.
In IPL 2024, Karthik has maintained a similar level of performance, showcasing his batting skills to enhance RCB’s lineup, a trait sought after by the Indian team for the upcoming ICC event.
Who else is competing with Dinesh Karthik for a spot in the Indian T20 World Cup 2024 squad?
There are four contenders challenging Dinesh Karthik for the wicketkeeper position: Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan. Pant, leading Delhi Capitals, has scored 210 runs with a strike rate of 156.71. KL Rahul, captaining Lucknow Super Giants, has amassed 286 runs at a strike rate of 143.
Meanwhile, Sanju Samson, leading Rajasthan Royals, has displayed excellent form, guiding the team to the top of the table with 276 runs at a strike rate of 155.05.
Mumbai Indians’ wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan has displayed moments of excellence, accumulating 192 runs at a strike rate of 172.97. However, due to poor form in IPL 2024, Jitesh Sharma is unlikely to secure a spot in the squad.
With all other wicketkeepers performing strongly in the lucrative league, it will be challenging for Karthik to secure his place in the team for the T20 World Cup.
