“It’s Not Always Necessary To Play In The 6th Gear”- Ishan Kishan

Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Ishan Kishan delivered an impressive innings, scoring 69 runs off just 34 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in an IPL 2024 match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, April 11. Ishan’s explosive start nearly secured the match in MI’s favor by the time he was dismissed.

The left-handed batsman discussed the valuable advice he received from players like Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, and how he has worked to integrate it into his game to enhance his overall performance.

In a video shared by the IPL, Ishan Kishan expressed while conversing with Suryakumar:

“HP (Hardik Pandya) bhai told me, it’s not always necessary to play in the sixth gear. When I was in the Indian team, you also told me that I needed to work on singles.”

”Even the bowlers have to keep guessing in which gear i will play if I have an all-round game. These are the small things I have worked on and try to execute it in the match.”

In the five IPL 2024 games played thus far, Ishan has amassed 161 runs at an impressive strike rate of 182.95. His ability to consistently provide rapid starts has greatly benefited MI this season.

Ishan Kishan reflects on his break from cricket

Ishan Kishan temporarily stepped away from cricket due to mental fatigue, and he feels that the training he underwent during that period has deepened his understanding of his game.

“When we keep playing at every stage, we forget our basics, the things that are important. We play in the flow just to have fun. But when you take a time off, you realise a lot of things, you get to understand the small things that are crucial,” he said in this regard.

Following consecutive victories, Mumbai Indians will now square off against their longstanding rivals, Chennai Super Kings, at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 14th.
