Jammu And Kashmir Crush Delhi For First Time In 65 Years

Delhi cricket faced an unprecedented setback as Jammu and Kashmir secured their first-ever victory over the seven-time Ranji Trophy champions, winning by seven wickets. The defeat marked a historic low for Delhi, who now sit sixth in Group D with only seven points after four matches under coach Sarandeep Singh.

With just four points from three home games, Delhi’s qualification chances for the knockouts appear bleak. The team’s struggles stem from questionable selections, tactical errors, lack of strong leadership, and persistent internal factionalism within the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). Since 1960, Delhi and J&K have clashed 43 times, with Delhi dominating 37 matches, making this loss even more significant.

Qamran Iqbal And Paras Dogra Lead J&K To Glory

Chasing 179 on the final day, Jammu and Kashmir needed 124 more runs with opener Qamran Iqbal firmly set at the crease. The young opener produced a match-winning unbeaten 133 off 147 balls, displaying remarkable confidence and control on a pitch that initially seemed challenging. Iqbal’s big strides and aggressive intent neutralised any turn from the surface as Delhi’s spinners Hrithik Shokeen and Mannan Bhardwaj failed to bowl with precision or consistency.

Their attempts to rush through overs backfired, providing little assistance from the pitch. Towards the end, Iqbal punished the bowlers with powerful one-handed shots and lofted boundaries. Veteran Paras Dogra, aged 40, also played a vital role with a century in the first innings. The seasoned cricketer, second only to Wasim Jaffer in Ranji Trophy runs, has been consistent this season with centuries against both Mumbai and Delhi, proving that experience still has immense value in the domestic circuit.

Delhi’s Selection Woes And Leadership Issues Exposed

Delhi’s defeat once again exposed the flaws in team management and player selection. Despite a poor 2024 season, head coach Sarandeep Singh was retained, allegedly due to DDCA lobbying, which has further disrupted team stability. Captain Ayush Badoni has shown glimpses of talent with some stylish half-centuries, but has failed to inspire fear in opponents. Promising domestic performers like Arpit Rana have struggled against quality pace attacks, while aggressive opener Priyansh Arya was initially benched and later played out of position.

Even with reliable wicketkeeper-batters such as Tejasvi Dahiya and Pranav Raghuvanshi available, the underperforming Anuj Rawat continues to be favoured despite his modest career average. Following this humiliating loss, DDCA president Rohan Jaitley is reportedly preparing to take strict action, as Delhi cricket faces an urgent need for accountability, fresh leadership, and a complete structural overhaul to revive its lost glory.
