Veteran India speedster Jasprit Bumrah will not be featured in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting Tuesday, January 9. As per the reports of Cricbuzz, a call has been taken and it is decided that there will not be any rush for him to return to action so soon. Moreover, he hasn’t reached Guwahati, the venue where the first ODI will be played.

However, the BCCI had earlier included him in the ODI squad on the recommendation of the all-India selection committee. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka,” the BCCI had shared in a January 3 media release.

Notably, Jasprit Bumrah has been out of cricketing action since September 2022 and he was also ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to a back injury as well.

“The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He will be joining the Team India ODI squad soon,” the BCCI had further said.

However, it has now been understood that he will not be playing the ODIs with recommendations particularly coming from the NCA staff as well as the call has been taken considering the upcoming Test series against Australia and World Cup later this year in mind. Although there is no confirmation about his return, sources have said he might play in the series against New Zealand in three ODIs and as many T20I as well.

However, after a 2-1 win in the shortest format against Sri Lanka, India are all set for the 50-over format against the same opponent. This time, they will get the service of regular captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer as well.

India’s updated squad for Sri Lanka ODIs:

Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh
