India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah reached a major milestone with a five-wicket haul against England on Day 3 of the opening Test at Headingley, Leeds, on Sunday, June 22. Having already picked up three key wickets on Day 2, Bumrah returned to dismiss Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue, helping bowl England out for 465 and handing India a narrow six-run first-innings lead before tea.
This marked Bumrah’s 12th five-wicket haul in overseas Tests, putting him level with Kapil Dev for the most by an Indian in away matches in the longest format. Remarkably, the 31-year-old achieved the feat in just 34 Tests, while Kapil took 66 to reach the same milestone. With the five-match series in England still underway, Bumrah will be eager to surpass the former India captain’s record.

England Stay In The Fight Despite Bumrah’s Five-Wicket Haul In Series Opener
Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with the ball for India, but England still managed to post a strong total of 465 in their first innings. While Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj supported him with three and two wickets respectively, both proved expensive—Krishna conceding 128 runs in 20 overs and Siraj giving away 122 in 27.
Ollie Pope anchored the innings with a superb 106 off 137 balls, including 14 fours, while Harry Brook narrowly missed a century, falling for 99 off 112. Ben Duckett (62), Jamie Smith (40), and Chris Woakes (38) also made valuable contributions. Additionally, Joe Root, captain Ben Stokes, and Woakes chipped in with useful scores in the 20s.
Earlier, India had posted 471 after being asked to bat first. The total was powered by brilliant centuries from captain Shubman Gill (147), Rishabh Pant (134), and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (101). For England, Josh Tongue and Ben Stokes were the standout bowlers, picking up four wickets each.
