Jonathan Trott Reflects Emotionally After Stepping Down as Afghanistan Head Coach

Under Jonathan Trott’s leadership, Afghanistan played some of their best cricket over the past three years, even reaching the semifinals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. After Afghanistan’s last match in the 2026 T20 World Cup, Trott stepped down as head coach.

He spoke to the media following the team’s win over Canada, but even though they won, Afghanistan did not make it to the Super Eight stage. This was officially his final moment as head coach, bringing his three-and-a-half-year journey with the team to an end.

At the press conference, Jonathan Trott became emotional, paused for a moment, and then praised the team for their efforts. He said:

“Well, I could share countless stories from what I’ve witnessed firsthand. The talent is undeniable. I remember our first tour in Ireland, what I saw there made me realise how gifted and driven these boys were,” he said. If we could simply add more structure to their mindset, professionalism, and the standards we expect, not just individually but collectively, it could elevate them even further,” he added.

“I still recall watching Ibra (Ibrahim Zadran), Azmat (Azmatullah Omarzai), and Gurbaz (Rahmanullah Gurbaz) for the first time and thinking, what exceptional players. Alongside names like Mujeeb, Nabi, and Rashid, the raw ability was always there. That first tour felt chaotic, but where the team stands today compared to then is chalk and cheese.”

“The players need so much credit for the level they operate at, the advantages they’re afforded as youngsters to develop their skills and their passion for the game.”

Afghanistan national cricket team Eliminated as Jonathan Trott Ends Coaching Stint

Afghanistan’s win over Canada was only their second victory in the tournament. But losses to New Zealand national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team meant they could not move on to the next round.

It was Jonathan Trott’s last match as head coach. During his three years in charge, Afghanistan performed very well, including making it to the semifinals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

“They perform at an incredibly high level despite not having the same resources as other nations. People now expect them to reach semifinals and finals, which is remarkable considering they don’t have regular access to academies, facilities, structured coaching, or the same schooling systems,” he said.

“I was thinking today that without the education, academy training, and coaching I received, I’m not sure I could have handled playing in front of 20,000 people and executed my skills with clarity. The difference in coaching levels is chalk and cheese. I truly take my hat off to them, their standard continues to amaze me, and I’ll always wish them well,” he added.
