Former South Africa great Jonty Rhodes has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Bangladesh’s exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, offering a frank perspective on the long-debated relationship between politics and sport.
Rhodes acknowledged that while many stakeholders prefer to view sport as separate from political influences, reality often paints a different picture. As he put it clearly, “You can’t separate politics from sport.” His remarks come at a time when global cricket is grappling with the fallout of Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the tournament and the subsequent reshuffle by the governing body.
ICC’s Firm Stand And Bangladesh’s Withdrawal
The controversy erupted after the International Cricket Council officially confirmed that Scotland would replace Bangladesh in the 2026 T20 World Cup. The decision followed the Bangladesh Cricket Board expressing reservations about playing matches in India and requesting a venue shift to Sri Lanka. However, the ICC rejected the proposal, stating that there was “no credible or verifiable security threat” that justified altering the tournament schedule.
The ICC revealed that it had engaged in extensive discussions with the BCB over several weeks and had examined independent security reports, risk assessments, and logistical preparations. Despite these efforts, the global body maintained that changing venues so close to the event was not practical.
The eventual withdrawal by Bangladesh resulted in financial losses for the board and sparked a wider debate about whether external factors influenced the decision.
T20 World Cup’s Unpredictability Still Excites Rhodes
Beyond the controversy, Rhodes also focused on the positives of the upcoming tournament, particularly praising the expanded 20-team format. He described the structure as “fantastic”, highlighting how T20 cricket continues to evolve and captivate audiences worldwide. According to Rhodes, the shortest format remains thrilling because “one player can change a game in 10 minutes.”
While acknowledging the challenges administrators face in balancing safety, logistics, and fairness, Rhodes’ comments underline a hard truth — sport does not operate in isolation.
His remarks serve as a reminder that cricket, like many global sports, is influenced by broader realities beyond the boundary ropes. Yet, amid the debate, the excitement surrounding the T20 World Cup and its unpredictable nature remains undiminished for fans and former players alike.
