In a high-stakes battle between two IPL giants stuck at the bottom of the table, the 43rd match of the 2025 IPL season saw Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With both teams desperate to keep their playoff hopes alive, it turned out to be a match full of drama, tactics, and unexpected twists.
CSK vs SRH: Match Overview
SRH captain Pat Cummins won the toss and had no hesitation in opting to field first, a move that hinted at exploiting the early conditions and putting pressure on the CSK top order. With the season slipping away, CSK made bold changes—Dewald Brevis, Deepak Hooda, and Sam Curran were drafted in to provide fresh energy and balance. SRH responded by bringing in the versatile Kamindu Mendis and the experienced Mohammed Shami, looking to strengthen both spin and pace departments.
CSK vs SRH: Powerplay Drama
CSK had a nightmare start, losing three wickets in the powerplay. The top order crumbled under pressure as SRH bowlers bowled tight lines. Harshal Patel was clinical, executing his variations with near perfection. He was pivotal in containing runs and bagging key wickets early.
Kamindu Mendis’ Magic Delivery
The most jaw-dropping moment came when Kamindu Mendis clean bowled Ravindra Jadeja in the 10th over. The delivery was a slider that skidded low, catching Jadeja off-guard. Mendis, with his ambidextrous bowling style, made it nearly impossible for Jadeja to read the length. It was a brilliant piece of cricketing chess. On the third ball of the 10th over, Jadeja went back in his crease, aiming to flick, only to see the ball sneak under his bat and rattle the stumps.

Dewald Brevis: A Debut Worth Talking About
Brevis made an instant impact, smashing 4 sixes in a 25-ball 42. It was aggressive, fearless, and much-needed for CSK. With Rachin out due to form concerns, Brevis stepped up and showed why he’s considered a future superstar. Just when he looked set for a big one, Brevis was dismissed, triggering a collapse that CSK couldn’t recover from.
Ayush Mhatre lit up the innings with a fast-paced and intent-driven knock, scoring 30 off 19 balls. His aggressive approach gave Chennai Super Kings a momentary hope of revival amidst their batting struggles. In a season where CSK has faced multiple setbacks, young talents like Mhatre are proving to be bright spots, showing promise for the team’s future.
CSK’s Struggles and Missed Partnerships
The CSK middle order has lacked consistency. Apart from Jadeja and Brevis, there was no stability or momentum. Sam Curran managed just 9 runs, Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with 21, and Shivam Dube added 12, but none could capitalize on their starts.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowlers delivered a clinical performance, with Harshal Patel leading the charge. He dismantled CSK’s lower order, claiming four crucial wickets and putting them under immense pressure. Despite a few decent knocks, CSK struggled to build momentum and never found their rhythm. Their innings eventually came to an end in 19.5 overs, with the team folding for just 154 runs.
