Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer recently stated that he will have a close look at how Umran Malik performs in the upcoming Ranji Trophy. The premier domestic competition kicked off on Tuesday, December 13.

Since his breakthrough campaign in IPL 2022 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Umran has not looked back. He was immediately drafted into India’s T20I squad and has been a regular member since then.

Wasim Jaffer, however, feels Umran Malik is best suited for red-ball cricket and ODIs rather than T20Is. Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Jaffer said:

“Among the bowlers, I am very keen to look at how Umran Malik does for Jammu and Kashmir, how he plays the four-day format. I feel that he is better suited for Test and ODI cricket because he can bowl at pace and hit lengths consistently.”

In six first-class matches, Umran Malik has picked up 11 wickets at an economy rate of 4.60. He last played for the Rest of India in the Irani Cup match against Saurashtra back in October.

“I am keen to see how he approaches this season” – Wasim Jaffer on Sarfaraz Khan

Wasim Jaffer will also have a close tab on Mumbai’s Sarfaraz Khan, who has been pilling on runs at will in the last few seasons. Despite scoring tons of runs, a national call-up has eluded him so far. He will look to make this opportunity count this season.

“I would probably be looking at Sarfaraz Khan because he has been prolific in the first two seasons, literally getting close to 1000 runs. I am keen to see how he approaches this season since he is yet to be picked to play for India, which I thought he will,” Jaffer said.

Wasim Jaffer also talked about Yashavsi Jaiswal, Shaikh Rasheed and Yash Dhull, who have all emerged as cricketers since their U19 days.
