Cricket in India often brings together immense talent and high expectations, and controversies are never far behind. The recent fallout between the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) and Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is the latest example. In December, Sanju Samson chose to miss Kerala’s three-day Vijay Hazare Trophy practice camp in Wayanad due to personal reasons. As a result, the Kerala Cricket Association did not select him for the premier domestic 50-over tournament. This decision has not been well-received by BCCI officials and selectors.
The Controversy Explained
The controversy began when Sanju Samson opted out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy preparatory camp held in Wayanad. According to KCA President Jayesh George, Samson sent a one-line text stating he would not be available for the 30-member camp. This came as a surprise, as Samson was expected to lead the squad, having captained Kerala in the SMAT earlier in the season.
Jayesh George, in a statement, expressed his disappointment with Samson’s decision. He emphasized that KCA has a strict policy in place for team selection, which applies to all players, including star performers like Samson. While acknowledging Samson’s immense talent, George questioned whether the Kerala team could be treated as a backup option for the player.
Jayesh George’s Comments on Discipline
Jayesh George clarified that he was unsure if Samson’s absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy was the sole reason for his exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad. However, he reiterated that consistent participation in domestic cricket plays a significant role in national team selection.
George defended KCA’s decision to omit Samson from the squad, highlighting the importance of adhering to policies. He acknowledged Samson’s contributions to Kerala cricket but stressed that no player is above the team’s regulations. In light of the controversy, BCCI COO Hemang Amin reached out to George for clarification. George confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken against Samson and assured Amin that the player’s absence was not due to any punitive measures.
The announcement of India’s squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy added another layer to the controversy. Samson, despite being a talented white-ball player, was not included in the squad, sparking speculation about the reasons behind his exclusion.
“The selectors and the board have been very clear on the importance of domestic cricket. Last year, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer lost central contracts for missing domestic matches without seeking permission. Even in Samson’s case, the board and selectors were not given any reason why he missed the tournament. All that is known so far is that he spends much of his time in Dubai,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by TOI.
Team Spirit and Commitment
The controversy raises questions about the balance between individual talent and team obligations. While players like Samson bring star power, their commitment to the team’s cause is equally important. This episode could have long-term implications for Sanju Samson’s career. While his talent is undeniable, maintaining strong relationships with cricketing authorities is crucial for sustained success.
“The selectors would want a valid reason. Otherwise, it will be difficult to consider him for the ODI season. Samson has had a bitter history with the KCA, but that needs to be sorted out for him to play in domestic cricket. It can’t be that the state association and he have a misunderstanding, and he misses out on game time. He did play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy preceding the Vijay Hazare Trophy,” the source added.

One of the key takeaways from this incident is the importance of clear and transparent communication between players and associations. Misunderstandings can often escalate into larger issues, as seen here. Both players and associations must work together to resolve conflicts amicably. Mutual respect and understanding are essential for the growth of cricket in India.
