Ahead of the third Test against England in Rajkot, scheduled for Thursday, Yashasvi Jaiswal, the India opener and double-centurion from the previous match, had an exclusive conversation with JioCinema, covering various subjects. Excerpts:
Regarding the significance of his double century in the second Test compared to his other innings: “Every innings has its own satisfaction, there’s a different fun to each one of them, so every time I score runs, I enjoy it.”
“I think meeting MS Dhoni was my most nervous in that match, which was my first-ever IPL game,” said Jaiswal.
Regarding his family’s celebration of his performance: “We spent quality time together, shared meals and drinks; it was a moment worth cherishing. I had envisioned a specific celebration style for scoring a double century, and the way I celebrated was something I had planned in my mind for a long time.”
On the mental adjustments for a five-Test series: “I was genuinely excited about the prospect of a five-match series. It involves navigating through various phases – sometimes smooth, sometimes challenging – providing ample learning opportunities.”
“It also allowed me more time to bond with the team and relish the journey from West Indies to South Africa and back to India. There has been a lot to absorb, and I am thoroughly enjoying the experience.”

Addressing the adjustments required for playing in diverse conditions in the West Indies, South Africa, and India: “Every place has its unique culture, and when we join the Indian team, we learn those cultures from our seniors.”
”I engage in conversations with Rohit bhai, Rahul Sir, and Virat bhaiya to gather as much information as possible. The conditions in the West Indies and South Africa were distinct, and having experience playing in India gives us an understanding of the conditions. Therefore, my goal is to consistently learn and enhance my game.”
Discussing the term ‘Jazball’ in reference to his batting style in the series: “I accept any name given to me with love. However, Jaiswal is my surname, and I would be content if people simply call me Jaiswal.”
Addressing whether there were any exchanges with James Anderson during the second Test: “No, there was nothing of that sort. When there is a good ball, I need to respect it, and if it’s a loose ball, I aim to score. He is one of the world’s great bowlers, and I genuinely enjoyed playing against him.”
Discussing the transition between different cricket formats: “Both formats come with distinct demands, played at different times of the day. T20s are in the evening, Tests during the day, where the red ball exhibits seam and swing.”
”Having experienced the switch between red and white ball cricket over the past few years, I have a good understanding of how to handle these conditions. However, a positive mindset is crucial in both formats. Prioritizing what the team needs is essential, so I aim to contribute accordingly.”
Reflecting on his initial encounter with MS Dhoni, marked by a photo where he greeted Dhoni with folded hands: “I was genuinely pleased to see him for the first time and greeted him with a namaste. Unsure about what to say or how to react, that namaste was a gesture of respect to him as an elder.”
”I believe that was the match where I felt the most nervous, my first-ever IPL game, and Dhoni Sir was keeping, making it a special moment. That image remains one of the best in my life.”
