Deep Dasgupta believes that the decision to name KL Rahul as vice-captain could have been paused. A few days back the Indian team was announced for the big Australian tour that will take place after IPL 2020. The big occurrence from the squad was KL Rahul being named as vice-captain for the limited-overs series.
Due to a hamstring injury, the selectors decided not to include Rohit Sharma in the Indian side. During IPL while leading Mumbai Indians, Rohit sustained an injury after which he hasn’t played any game. As a result, Rahul has now been trusted to be the vice-captain for the ODI and T20I series.
Rohit Sharma’s Fitness Is 50-50: Deep Dasgupta
Former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta recently pointed out that Rohit is still in contention for the Australian tour. He reckons that if Rohit can recover and play for MI in the remaining matches he might just be on the plane to Australia. According to the current commentator, Rohit’s fitness at present is 50-50 and has just resumed his batting in the nets.
“Rohit still hasn’t played any game in a while now, but I guess if he is fit to play for the Mumbai Indians then he will be part of the national team. But what I know is that he is still 50:50, although he has just started to bat in the nets”, Dasgupta said in an interaction on Sports Today.
“I guess it is just a matter of time. As soon as he is fit to play a game or a few games, then he will be ready. It is a hamstring issue and you don’t want to include someone who is not 100 per cent fit”, he added.
KL Rahul As Vice-Captain Could Have Been On Hold
Meanwhile, several reports also suggested that Rohit was unavailable for selection as his injury looks serious. Dasgupta further added that a fit Rohit Sharma has to be included in the India side. According to him the selectors could have waited more on his injury details and announcing KL Rahul as vice-captain could have been delayed.

“Rohit is fit, he has to be there. There is no doubt about it. Maybe Mayank Agarwal’s injury is not as serious and therefore his name is included. But a fit Rohit Sharma has to be included in the team”.
“Maybe announcing the vice-captain could have been on hold. They could have waited for Rohit’s injury details for another week, and then gone ahead with it”, Deep Dasgupta concluded.
Furthermore, it will be interesting to see whether Rohit plays against RCB in today’s match in IPL 2020. Also, the Australian tour is still a month away and the physios will constantly monitor the progress of the star batsman and decide on his participation.
