Kumble: BCCI informed me that Kohli had a problem with me: Anil Kumble on Tuesday decided to discontinue as coach of the Indian team and subsequently resigned from his post thereby bringing an end to a successful term as coach of the Indian cricket team.
Not often does a great player go on to become a great coach, however, in Kumble”s case, it was an exception as Team India scaled new highs under him.
Just when it looked like Kumble was all set to leave with the team to West Indies, this after he received the backing from the advisory panel of BCCI – comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly, Kumble decided to step down.
Yes, there was a problem and Anil Kumble only got to know about it on Monday from the BCCI that captain Virat Kohli had a problem with his style of coaching.
Kumble’s contract was supposed to end June on 30th, however, he was given an extension by the BCCI. Meanwhile, Kumble learned that Kohli had conveyed to the BCCI that, there was hardly any communication between the two and Kohli was finding it very hard to continue this way. Kumble was later asked by the Board to sort out the issues between them, however, Kumble decided to end things after apparently being deeply hurt and disappointed by Virat”s statement.
The former Indian captain later released an official statement on social media thanking all his followers and fans for their support and wishes. He also thanked the BCCI for believing in him and giving him the extension. Kumble also said, ” I was informed for the first time yesterday by the BCCI that the Captain had reservations with my ‘style’ and about my continuing as the Head Coach. I was surprised since I had always respected the role boundaries between Captain and Coach. Though the BCCI attempted to resolve the misunderstandings between the Captain and me, it was apparent that the partnership was untenable, and I, therefore, believe it is best for me to move on.”
