England’s pace spearhead Mark Wood recently opened up about the challenges he has faced against modern-day batting greats. When asked to identify the toughest batter he has bowled to, Wood singled out Indian captain Rohit Sharma. He highlighted Rohit’s exceptional ability to deal with short-pitched bowling, an area where many batters often struggle.
According to Wood, on Rohit’s best days, it almost felt like the bat in his hand was expanding in width, making it incredibly difficult to get past him. The English pacer admitted that once Rohit found his rhythm, his control and dominance at the crease made him one of the hardest batters to dismiss.
Rohit’s proficiency against pace and his ability to adapt quickly have been central to his success in international cricket. His impeccable timing, combined with his natural flair, often frustrates bowlers who find it tough to outsmart him. Wood’s comments reflect the respect many fast bowlers hold for Rohit, especially given his consistent performances in big-match scenarios.
Virat Kohli’s Competitive Edge
Alongside Rohit, Wood also shared his views on Virat Kohli, describing him as an “unbelievable competitor.” Kohli’s intensity and determination at the crease have earned him admiration across the cricketing world. The pacer, however, pointed out a minor technical detail he observed while bowling to Kohli — his vulnerability around the fourth and fifth stump lines.
Despite identifying this channel outside off-stump as a potential weakness, Wood noted that Kohli rarely missed opportunities when deliveries were aimed there. This made it just as challenging for the bowler, as Kohli’s consistency and sharp focus left little room for error.
Kohli’s unmatched drive, his hunger for runs, and his ability to chase down big totals have long defined his career. While bowlers may identify technical gaps, very few have consistently managed to exploit them against him, making Kohli one of the most complete batters of his era.
Retirement and Future Plans
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made headlines earlier this year when they announced their retirement from Test cricket, just before India’s home series against England. Their departure marked the end of a remarkable era for Indian cricket, leaving behind legacies that have shaped the game for over a decade.
Meanwhile, Wood himself has been sidelined due to a knee injury since the Champions Trophy in February, which has kept him away from Test cricket for more than a year. Despite his absence, England management continues to consider him an integral part of their future strategies, especially as they prepare for the next Ashes series in Australia. His pace and aggression remain crucial assets for the team’s long-term plans.
